at what age to boxer dogs start to be less energetic?

We have a 1 year old Fawn Boxer, female, who is super active and hyper at times. Just curious to hear from other Boxer owners when they start to calm down. Other then the hyper behavior, she is an amazing dog.

About 3 years is when they go from young dog to GREAT dog

  1. A female boxer dog is less energetic than a male boxer dog.

  2. Hmmm… I think around 10 years old. :)
Keep her active and find fun things for her to do and that energy will be harnessed in good ways.

Boxers are very playful dogs… "slowing down" isn’t really in their vocabulary.

  4. They’re called lifelong puppies for a reason! My 6 year old still hasn’t calmed down but that’s what I love about his breed and one of the reasons we specifically looked at this breed. He’s still running around like crazy every day. When he gets in the house, though, my dog has always been calm and ready to cuddle with us on the sofa but he’s ready to go any minute. Just make sure you’re giving her AT LEAST an hour of good exercise (not just throwing them out in a fenced yard but actual running or a good walk at least) every day.. Mine usually does get more and that tends to keep them calmer when you’re inside and just want to relax.

  5. Relatives of mine owned boxers, and I remember them discussing this once. They mentioned that their second year was the ‘growing up year’. At the end of the first year they are still puppies in behavior, even though they are almost full grown. By their 2nd birthday, they have settled down like adult dogs.

This matches my experience with other medium/large breeds (although my friend’s border collie would chase a ball like crazy, despite having only two good legs and generally being old and sick). Extra calm breeds (Labradors) may go through this a little quicker, but still pretty close to two years at adulthood.

  6. Never. They’re always active, unless they’re sick.

  7. My friend has a boxer, and I have known her for several years, since she was just a puppy. He asked me to train her, but I requested that all the dogs and other distractions in the house be removed before that could happen – doggy ADD, I guess. He has been through classes with her, and she is about seven now…and still the way she was when she was a puppy. I don’t think yours will calm down, except maybe, due to extreme age. Get used to it!
