Boxer Dogs?

February 9, 2010 - 7:07 pm 7 Comments

I wanted to get a Boxer Puppy for my family. Currently, it is my husband, daughter (4 yr old), and myself. Eventually we’ll have a baby around. We also have a 1 yr old cat. (tabby)

Can anyone with a Boxer let me know if you think this is the right dog for my family?

I did research online and it says that they are good with kids and small house pets, but I would like real life feedback.

Thanks!

Also, if anyone else is in the Miami Florida area – let me know if you happen to know any breeders in the area.

Thanks!

Boxers are great dogs. They are good with people, but I don’t know about cats. I’m sure it’s possible to get a boxer that’s good with cats. Check on petfinder.com. Here’s a link for a search I did on baby boxers in Miami:

http://search.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi?action=1&pet.Animal=Dog&pet.Breed=boxer&pet.Age=Baby&pet.Size=&pet.Sex=&location=miami%2C+fl&preview=1&scope=2&x=9&y=11

These guys are super cute! Please consider adopting your new boxer. There are many, many purebred and mixed boxers who need a home. See for yourself! And these dogs come with all their shots and spay/neuter. Good luck!

boxers are the BEST!!! i had one for years. got her when my kids were 2 and 7. also had cat and bird. she would let us put the bird on her back for rides. the cat didnt love her cause all she wanted to do was sniff her butt – but they didnt fight. when someone came over with baby or an old relative or someone (like my dad) that was scared of dogs or didnt like dogs, she knew somehow to just stay away. even the baby, would give a sniff then go away. everyone else would get the licks and attention. she even could tell when someone wasnt feeling good. like when i was sick or something was wrong, she would just stay by my side and kinda guard me and watch over me. boxers are the sweetest. good luck with your decision.

A well-bred, well-socialized Boxer can be a delightful family dog, although they need a lot of exercise! Do your research and select a quality breeder who is testing their breeding stock for hereditary problems (and ask to see copies of the paperwork!) and breeds for good temperament. Let the breeder know your needs/wants in a pet, and how the animal will be kept. Don’t limit yourself to a breeder in your area– it’s better to get a puppy from the right breeder even if you need to drive across the country to get the puppy than the wrong pup from a local breeder.

Here’s a link to the American Boxer Club. Take some time and read through the site’s information, and ask for a breeder referral. Under the top heading of ‘information’ is a drop-down menu with several articles about selecting the right breeder/puppy for you.

Boxers are basically wonderful family dogs…very protective of kids, affectionate and can be humorous. They’re bouncy and agile, so give them a place to play and work off the energy. They have soft mouths & wise faces…prone to occasional ear infections [easily treatable when they occur] and are generally smart enuf to train pretty easily. Their life span isn’t the greatest [8-10 years average--check with the breeder for their line's expectation...some go higher] but they’re easy to take care of…good eaters, nice shorthair coats, don’t get a ‘pong’ in damp weather.

My friend has a boxer and he is GREAT with babies! Although he does tend to chase cats. That may just be him though!

Yeah a BOXER! i have one his name is Harley. He’s amazing. Now my favorite breed. What everyone said and what you read is true they’re great with kids, ppl and animals despite what some ppl may think. (un-educated) cause trust me you’ll get it when he gets older ppl think he’s mean looking but really they’re nothing but sooks. LOL
Id totally recomend a boxer but you have to be warned that they’re EXSTREMELY hyper! and are like this for the first 5 years of their life. They need LOTS of exercise and walks or they will literally DISTROY your house. If you do real research online then you’ll read this. Ive done a tone when i bought my boy.
So as long as you’ll have the time to play/exercise and walk him things will be good. Oh and they’re stuborn so dont listen the greatest. They’re like clowns….you’ll see when you get one.
Enjoy and you should keep us posted :)
