What are the symptoms of epilepsy in dogs?

March 9, 2010 - 4:40 am 5 Comments

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone that has epilepsy in dogs could let me know if my dog has it.

It was in the middle of the night, my dog awoke to crawl under the covers and when doing it I heard almost like a cough. Then he just fell motionless and like dead weight. It was like he had died. It took about 5-10 sec before he awoke and was like nothing had happened. I am wondering if your dog has ever experienced this and would like to let me know. He is currently 9 months old.
He is a Chinese Crested

The one more major symptom would be seizures. Seizures can manifest in different ways, from looking dazed and confused, to a huge grand mall seizure where they flop around uncontrollably. If he did just "fall unconscious" I would have him checked out, though he might have just been sleeping. Keep a good eye on him. Watch him through the day, if he has bouts of confusion, staring, or his eyes start shaking or wiggling back and forth and he seems dazed. He could be having a series of very small seizures, and that can be controlled pretty well with medications.

TOO ADD: Is he a little dog breed? like a tiny one? Chi or Poodle or something? The coughing and collapsing can be caused by a genetic condition called Collapsed Trachea, which is a common ailment, its usually not severe to cause too many problems but some may have it so bad that it cuts of oxygen for a short time and he might have just, as you said, have passed out for a short time because of it. Either way its time for a good check up. Insist that they look him over thoroughly.

We cant take her to the vet. there all closed by now. trust me if they where open we would have been there by now.

No websites, sorry. Why not take your dog to the vet??

If your dog is "very ill" why is she not at the vet??? Poor thing! Vomiting, lack of appetite, and lethargy are not syptoms to take lightly!

ADD: There has to be an emergency clinic open in your area or within relative driving distance. Open the phone book and start calling. Your dog needs the vet.

Does anyone know if tracheal collapse in dogs has similar symptoms to kennel cough?

February 28, 2010 - 6:25 pm 5 Comments

My setter had kennel cough intra-nasal vaccine just over a week ago, and has developed what I think is post vaccine symptoms. I am worried though that he may have tracheal collapse which I think has similar symptoms….(although I know tracheal collapse is more common in toy breeds)

Collapsing trachea is not a suddenly occuring problem. They can however have this issue as they get older and they’re tissues break down and age too.

Bordatella (kennel cough vaccine) can cause coughing and sneezing if given nasally, but usually only right after the vaccine is administered.

Collapsing trachea causes a "reverse sneeze" sort of sound at random times.

Kennel cough causes a hacking cough without vomiting, although they may produce a small amount of phlegm.

What’s the best way to alleviate arthritis symptoms in dogs?

February 26, 2010 - 5:28 pm 8 Comments

My 10 yr old yellow lab was just diagnosed with arthritis. She’s absolutely fine, most of the time, runs, swims, etc. But, she has days, when she can not put any weight on her right front paw. The Vet gave me medacam, and that works very well. But is there anything else I can do for her?
She is at her normal weight, about 62 pounds, she is definitely not over-weight. She swims in the pool daily (usually several times, even when the leg acts up). I do give her glucosamine supplements (in honey). I’m interested in the magnetic therapy, do they make small mattress pads for dog beds?
She;s definitely not overweight, and I dont think she did anything to the paw, because it hurt initially, but then was absolutely fine for about a month, and then back to holding it in the air. I was really beginning to think the arthritis diagnosis was not right, until she started limping on it again…I’m not that familiar with arthritis, is that how it is, comes and goes?

I used magnetic therapy on my dog that extended her years beyond what doctors said. The magnets were from Nikken.
