What are some medium to large dog breeds that do well with apartment life?

I want to do a lot of research on a dog before I get one, but it must be good with living in an apartment. I have a backyard, but will most likely be walking it around the neighborhood, as my superintendent has a not-so-friendly dog back there a lot of the time. I most likely will try to get one from a rescue or shelter, but I just want some breeds I can look into that fit my lifestyle. Thanks!

Any breed can adapt to apt life, if you are willing to take be active with the dog. Dogs need a lot of exercise and mental stimulation, they become bored and destructive otherwise.

It would also be wise to check if there is any restriction on dogs allowed at the complex.

Greyhounds make excellent apartment dogs as long as you walk them every day and allow them to run in a yard off a leash. This can be accomplished by taking them to a dog park.

  4. Please look at a retired racing Greyhound. People think they need tons of room and exercise – NOT TRUE. While they do love a good walk (at least 20 minutes brisk walk a day), they will be at their happiest when curled up on a comfy bed or sofa sound asleep. They are extremely clean animals (almost cat-like) and have very gentle personalities. Check out your nearest center (google Adopt a Greyhound) and have a chat to the people who run it. I got one some 3 years ago now, and he is the most adored dog in our area – kids just love him!

  6. Well I know this might sound cliche, but I love labs and golden retrievers! My golden retriever is so sweet and calm. She doesn’t require a lot of attention and she’s very docile and laid back but she loves going on walks! I would also recommend beagles, the only problem is that they howl a lot haha.

  7. Get a Whippet, they love to be inside they hate the cold, but must have exercise daily walk and a good run.

  9. You will preferably need a breed which are fairly inactive indoors. I would suggest looking into; Greyhounds, English Mastiffs, English Bulldogs and the Standard Poodle.

I suppose also the key to owning any dog when you live in an apartment is plenty of exercise outdoors.
