What two dog breeds are most often confused with each other?

I am researching dog breeds to help my coworkers to better identify breeds. I need some help to figure where to go next. I already have pit bulls, Cocker spaniels, Yorkies vs Silkies, Lhasas vs Shih Tzus, and Huskies vs Malamutes.

Pit Bulls and Staffordshire Terriers are often mistaken by Black-mouth Curs, Presa Carnaros, Bull Mastiffs, American Bulldogs, Cano Corsos, Alpha Blue Bloods, Patterdale Terriers, Old English Bull Dogs, Dogo Argentinos, Boer Baels, Ca De Bau, and Alano Espanole.

American Bulldogs, old English Bulldogs and American Boxers are often confused.

Shih-Tsu and Maltese ale long haired look-alikes

  2. Someone brought her Irish Water Spaniel to the beach, and it was mistaken for a brown Standard Poodle.

Also, Silken Windhounds are sometimes mistaken for tiny Borzois.

EDIT: I just remembered Pulis and Komondors!

There’s also the American Eskimo and Japanese Spitz.

Rat Terriers are often mistaken for Jack Russells, too (many people outside the U.S. are not familiar with Rat Terriers).

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is often mistaken for a terrier, but the breed is actually in the hound group. I saw one for adoption, and it had been labeled a "Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and terrier mix".

Also, Basset Hounds and Basset Bleu de Gascognes are separate breeds, but look alike, except for coloring.

There’s the Chesapeake Bay Retriever and Labrador Retriever as well.

And Norwich, Norfolk, Cairn, and Glen of Imaal Terriers.

Leonbergers and Tibetan Mastiffs look very similar.

There’s also rough Collies and Shetland Sheepdogs, if people aren’t familiar with the different size standards.

There are so many breeds that look like the Great Pyrenees, too: Kuvasz, Cuvac, Akbash, Tatra Sheepdog, and Maremma Sheepdog.

Coton de Tulear is often mistaken for Bichon Frise.

Belgian Malinois are mistaken for German Shepherds.

I’ve heard Flat Coated Retrievers called "black Golden Retrievers".

Min Pins are often thought to be Miniature Dobermans (not exactly the same thing, but still.)

Papillons are typically thought to be Long Haired Chihuahuas.

Norwich and Norfolk Terriers and Cairn Terriers
Havanese is often confused with Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso, also, in addition to your comparison.

Smooth Fox Terrier and Parsons (Jack) Russel Terrier

Toy Fox Terrier, Rat Terrier and Chihuahua (As many* Chis are bred larger than standard)

The Scent Hounds are often all confused with each other, specifically red-colored Bloodhounds and Redbone Coonhounds, Beagles and Fox Hounds, Walker Hounds and Coonhounds etc.
Black and Tan Coonhounds are confused with natural eared and tailed Dobermans

Of Designer Mixed breeds: total confusion. A pekeapoo, maltipoo, cockapoo, mini labradoodle, poochon, and schnoodle, and cocker/peke all interchangeably resemble one another, and their owners usually want the distinction to be made and "clear" when calling them by "breed"

    Pointer and Dalmatian

Kuvasz and Great Pyrenees (and even some St. Bernards are confused as one of these)
Some think Newfs are black Great Pyrs and Great Pyrs are just white Newfs, depending on which one they are more familiar with and do not realize the opposite breed.

Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs and tailed Rottweilers or Rottie mix

    Shiba Inu and Finnish Spitz

When Shelties are bred too large or Collies too small, they’re often mislabeled

Doberman and German Pinschers indistinguishable to many.

Mini Schnauzer, Kelly Blue Terrier, Sealyham Terrier, Scottie, Wire Fox Terrier, Irish Terrier, Welsh Terrier are all often mixed up, especially if not groomed to type and/or left natural.

Natural eared/tailed Boxer is confused with Pit Bull and American Bull Dog

Various European Mastiff breeds are confused with each other. Also, Boerboel is often thought to be a dilute Mastiff with a docked tail when seen in the U.S.

Looks-wise they’re very different, but it seems to me that a lot of people don’t know that an Australian Shepherd and an Australian Cattle dog are not the same thing. So many people call my cattle dog an australian shepherd, and SO many dogs in shelters are listed as Australian Cattle Dog Mix when it’s clearly mostly Shepherd!

As far as dogs that look alike that you haven’t mentioned… A lot terriers get confused with each other.
Especially Norwich, Norfolk, and Glenn of Imaal terriers.

Also, Manchester Terriers and Miniature Pinchers (the black and tan ones) get confused a lot. I’ve even done a double take at a Manchester before b/c I though it was a MinPin!

    Samonyed v. Amercan Eskimo

That’s all the common breeds I can think of that get confused a lot!
