Do glucosamin supplements for hip and joint health for dogs have a negative impact on their urinary tract?

My dad’s dog has problems with struvite urinary crystals and UTI’s. But she is also older and I want him to start her on a glucosamin and chondroiten supplement for her hip and joints. I know quite a bit about dog supplements but can’t find the answer to this question anywhere. Do glucosamin and chondroiten supplements cause further urinary tract irritation for a dog already prone to urinary issues?

No, they have no negative impact! The supplements are amazing!! All our dogs are on them, rather they have hip/joint issues or not! The supplements are all the same rather it’s advertised for humans, horses or k-9’s! The only difference is the price, MUCH less expensive when you buy " human" supplements. Also, MSM is AMAZING for pain, my mother takes it daily for her Arthritis & swears by it! It is 100% natural like the Glucosamine, and will not cause any harm!!!! Hope this helps, Good luck!!

I’ve not heard of it. Glucosamine and chondroitin very rarely cause any side effects at all.

Not that I’ve heard of or experienced, and my dog gets one every day. That said, anything fed in large enough amounts puts pressure on the kidneys, which have to work to take it out of the blood. Crystals in the urine and kidneys are sometimes caused by a diet too high in minerals or overfeeding of vitamins. Talk to your vet about your dogs diet, as that could help a lot.
