Is feeding leftover Chinese food harmful to your dogs health?

March 31, 2010 - 9:42 am 36 Comments

I have leftovers, and I don’t want to just throw them away, but I don’t want to give them to my beagle if it’s going to cause serious damage. Help please?

I got it, if no one else did…

    Depends on what’s in it.

Feeding a lot of ‘table scraps’ will make him fat, but giving a little is perfectly fine it will not harm him. Just don’t give him the food if he is begging if he is when you gave him the food it will reward the begging so he will think if i beg I’ll get food.

There are lots of spices and sauces in Chinese food that can give your dog a very upset stomach or be poisonous. I’m positive it will at least give your dog massive diarrhea. A rapid change in a dog’s diet will cause lots of stomach issues and may irritate his digestive system.

Don’t do it if it’s got a lot of chili in it. Otherwise it should be fine if its just a treat. Don’t make a habit of it though.

I don’t think it will cause serious damage, but giving your dog junk food isn’t really a smart idea. He’ll start getting used to it and might get to be a picky eater or he’ll get fat(ter) or get diarrhea. I wouldn’t give it to my dog.

JUST MIX A LITTLE BIT OF IT WITH HIS NORMAL DOG FOOD. LIKE 1/2 CUP. IF YOU GIVE TOO MUCH OF ANY FOOD YOUR DOG IS NOT USED TO YOUR DOG WILL GET DIARRHEA OR EVEN WORSE, BLOAT.

there’s a lot of grease in Chinese food may cause your beagle to get fat n get health problems or even worms in his stomach. and if its spicy food may cause him to get rabies(you don’t want that.) i suggest not to give him that at all.

White rice won’t hurt. Nothing spicy, though.

Problem is, the dog will be hungry again an hour later.

I wouldn’t because a dogs system is much smaller than ours. What is unhealthy for us is multiplied because a dog is usually much smaller than we are and they age much faster. Occasionally very small bites are OK. I recommend even these be placed in the dogs bowl to prevent begging at the table. Beagles are especially prone to get overweight.

Look at the labels on dog food and try and avoid those with fillers. The less the better. More filler – More Poop.

    Don’t give in.

My grandparents had a dachshund and fed it from the table. His stomach dragged the floor. Sad.

I have a completely unsubstantiated theory lately about feeding dogs. Dogs like humans are omnivores. We have owned 5 dogs one at a time over the many years. None have been fat. I have had each one on demand feeding with dry food. Every morning I give one small sized Bison Brand Chip dip container of dry food. Into that I mix about 5 small pieces of meat or other scraps topped with hot tap water over the mix. Most mornings it is eaten right away. If it is not, so what? They always eat it eventually. They get reasonable amounts of table scraps, but most scraps are set aside for morning meal mixes. All my dogs have had very tolerant digestive systems. All have lived healthy expected life spans. Most made it longer and had healthy lives.

So… which is better. Feeding your dog highly advertised, highly processed, highly vet sponsored, highly priced, good for it, "dog" food or a variety of many foods? I vote for variety. Feeding your dog only one type of food may doom it to having a sensitive digestive system that can even appear to be allergies. I’m not saying to feed a dog what we eat all the time. No animal worth it’s salt would choose to eat the junk we do. Giving them a variety of food within reason won’t hurt them. As is true so often, moderation is the key.

I’ve even given my dogs small bits of chocolate occasionally. "Oh my god, that’s a poison to dogs!!!" Yep, in quantity. So is alcohol in quantity to humans. You’d better put that wine glass down immediately before it kills you on the spot. Let’s keep the big picture in mind with these things.

Just freeze your left overs if you are able and throw back into the wok at a later time. But do NOT give your doggie left over Chinese food laden with oil and MSG in it.

On second thought – neither should you. Just toss it!

I’ve given my two dogs (~35 and ~75 lbs) many kinds of leftovers (human food) without an obvious bad effects. They have pretty good constitutions, though. I always mix it with dog food and it’s never more than 20-30%. I refrigerate any greater than that until it’s gone. Having said this, you probably know your dog’s digestive strength better than anyone. I’ve never heard of MSG being any worse for dogs than humans. Almost all of the wives tales about certain food being poisonous to dogs is just that. Quantity is the possible problem.

Is there something wrong with it? Why don’t you eat it?

It might have a high fat content. I’d go against it, but if it’s a one in a while treat, it should be okay, as long as your beagle isn’t allergic to anything.

Really, what Bindi said was the most precise, ‘depends on what’s in it.’

I think it’s harmful to your dog. I work at my uncle take out retaurant. Trust me I know what goes in it. It’s ok for humans to eat it. But the store they reuse the oil you the dirty looking oil after a while they keeping using it and change it like every year /months. So yea next time dont feed your dog but feed it it like vegatable or meat or dog food!

Don’t give them to your dog- chinese food can sometimes have MSG and other less than healthy ingredients that could harm dogs, because of their smaller digestive system (in the same way they cannot eat chocolate)

I’d say it depends on the proportion (1/2 a cup should be fine) and the ingredients. Remember: onions, grapes, and chocolate are pure poison to dogs (not that grapes and choco are usually in Chinese food, but who knows >.>).
