How do symptoms of heart worm in dogs start progressing. What are the first things you notice?

I have a dog that we got dehydrated and full of fleas. We bathed her and de wormed her and lots of food and water and love. Oh and ac. She will be tested aug 13 but wondering till then. She is very active and happy but dis colored fur which i know is a sign and rapid breathing in sleep.

Discolored fur is not a symptom of heartworms. The first symptoms seen tends to be exercise intolerance (can’t exercise as much),progressing to coughing, labored breathing, distended abdomen in advanced cases…

As a stray, you don’t know if she has been on any preventative or not so there is of course a risk that she has heartworms.

you need the 4dx test to tell if she has heartworms. any dog that is exposed to skeeters will get them, it is the adults that cause issues in the heart and when killed off. they need to slowly be killed off in a heartworm + dog based on the results from the 4dx test. this is why giving monthy preventative is important as it kills off the little worms before they cause issues. once you get the results keep her on the heartworm year round for fewer risks

heartworms can go undetected for a long time, sometimes a year or more if not properly tested for them. Only when the heartworm disease gets bad, do you start noticing clear signs. hacking and coughing is really the only noticable sign that I know of. She most likely has them if she was a stray that has been outside with mosquitos. So just prepare yourself.
