I would say a Beagle. I LOVE Beagles! But, they don’t make good guard dogs, they make GREAT watchdogs. Which, can be pretty affective to a certain degree. They are GREAT with children: I’ve had 3 Beagles so far, and they’ve always been good around anyone!

How old is the child??
ETA: NO DOG for any house with children under 5. You won’t find any reputable breeders, and probably any rescues, who will sell you a dog with a 1yr old.

For your situation most dog guards are med-large size. What kind of age of kids are you talking about?

Labradors and golden retrievers are, I’d say, some of the friendliest breeds of dogs. All dogs are good with children – it all depends on how they are trained. If you want a friendly dog that would also be a good guard dog and also very loyal, I would recommend a german shepherd or collie dog.

NOT A GOLDEN RETREIVER THAT IS NOT A FREINDLY BREED! I recomed a english mastiff that would just love the kids they are truly gentle giants that will protect you if nessesary but is NOT aggressive I have one she is the sweetest dog she is 8 months and 140lbs! she will be 230+lbs full grown they are big but intellegent and so sweet but what ever people say DO NOT GET A GOLDEN RETREIVER!

Standard Poodles are great dogs to have around kids, If you get one as a pup and child is a baby they grow together and bond.
I have 15 of them and trust them with my 3 year old grand son whole heartedly. Two of them have be raised with gr son and they will even allow him to get in to their crate.
@ for Piper, you need to check your facts, you said "no breeder will sell a puppy to people with children under the age of 1" I have sold many of my pups to people with kids and know personally quite a few other breeders that do.

Oh, i would not buy a dog if a 1year old would get to be with it, thats to harsh to the dog, kids are very often rough with animals especially small kids who don’t even know what they are doing. If the kid does something really bad the dog WILL loose its patience and could harm the child.

What you’re going to get, is primarily opinion. You have to be attracted to the breed’s looks as well as it’s attributes. Any dog that is properly socialized and brought up can be good with kids. Most dogs will protect/guard their house and their people. The dog takes his home and yard as his territory and will protect it as well it’s pack members. i.e. your family, frequent guests etc Bernese Mountain Dogs are wonderful with young children and although they are extremely good people dogs, they are know to be protective of children. Personally, I find American Pit Bulls to be wonderful family dogs. They are my breed. They are wonderful when raised with children and they will watch your home for you. They will give off a warning bark and some will back it up. Doberman Pinschers are also great with children. Properly bred dobies are wonderful with everyone, but just the sight of one in the yard will deter most intruders! German Shepherds of course, as well as Rottweilers, Siberian Huskies, Great Pyrenees, Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, Collie, Border Collie. Akitas were prized in Japan as nanny dogs. Mothers would leave their newborn babies alone with an Akita. They are wonderful guard dogs and can be great with kids. But, they do require a firm hand and extensive training. Like I said, almost any breed can be a protector and companion for a family with children. What you also need to figure out, is how much activity and play the dog will get. No dog should be stuck on the backyard or on a chain. Many protective breeds require lots of training or they become bad statistics. Always get your dog from a knowledgable and reputable breeder. If they don’t ask you questions about your lifestyle or your home environment, then don’t buy from them!
