Why do people continue to buy dogs from pet stores, when they are just supporting puppy mills?
Pet store dogs are from puppy mills. If you want a dog, get one from a breeder, not a pet store. If you’re going to spend all that money on a dog, then do it right and don’t support puppy mills. If you don’t know what a puppy mill is, then google it or look it up on Youtube so you can see pictures of what dogs are put through at puppy mills.
One thing that Pet Stores and Breeders have in common… charging way too much for a dog. I’d rather buy from a byb than 1000’s of dollars on a puppy. I’ll take my chances on health concerns… worked out so far for me…
Oh, and when I TRIED to use a breeder… they told me no because my husband is military and they didn’t want "Their" puppy to ever have to move… When I buy a shirt, it’s my shirt. When I buy shoes, they’re my shoes. When I buy a puppy, it’s my puppy. The only thing I would sign was the spay contract, but they said no because I wouldn’t agree to never move again for the life of the dog.

Good question! It’s been in the news for YEARS not to buy from pet stores- they should not be allowed to sell puppies period. People can be so stupid.

A lot of prissy little movie stars and celebrities buy little purse doggies from pet shops because they are "SOOO CUTE!" I wonder if their thoughts would be changed if they went to a puppy mill and saw the horror of them cramped in cages and how badly they are treated

Pure ignorance. Yeah, the puppy mill industry has been exposed for years, but every pet shop GUARANTEES that THEIR puppies come from "private breeders" and that they’re "USDA approved" (which, I’m sure you know is bullsht). People see the horrors of puppy mills on the news, but no one publicizes the different selling scams that pet stores use, so people buy into it.

people are not aware of that. and plus they always find a puppy they like at a pet store instead in a shelter. shelter dogs are old and not cute. its sad i must say. they need home too. stop puppy mill!!

It gets me mad too. Pet stores are put in malls and other places where when you’re walking by them, the kids go "I want a dog please" and the parents give in and get a dog. Others just get a dog on a whim without doing their research. Other people know about puppy mills, but they feel like they are helping the dog by buying it so it isn’t in the pet store anymore. Others just don’t take responsibility for what they do. Hopefully, someday, puppy mills will end. Until then, inform people of what puppy mills are.

i agree,its sicknen,i get mine from people who buy them then dont want them,so i adopt…Its hard for me to even think about it,even from breeders if they dont be choosy about who they sell to they end up sold to the people that use them in the mills..its sad and i hate it,but what do we do..got any ideas?..ARIES LOVE

The sad truth is: Dogs from puppy mills will likely to be killed or given to the pound if not baught from the pet store.
the funny thing: If the puppy mill dogs are given to the pound, they’ll be encouraged to be bought more so then they are from the petstore.
There is also the fact that when most people see a dog, they see not a ‘highly bred good standard, profesionally bred specimen’ but, well, a dog. A good companion, protecter, and someone to play with. Most people don’t care if their dog was professionally bred or milled. They just want a dog, and they don’t care about it’s linage.
Also, if you look at the average person who is a first time dog owner, they wouldn’t tell you the diffenrnce between a breeder and a puppy mill. To someone who doesn’t know a lot about dogs, they both just breed dogs, adding more to an overpopulized species. Sure, breeders are better, but only because they have purebreed dogs ((which some mills have)) and /generally/ treat dogs better by breeders, but otherwise, they are basically the same.
Basically, the average person gets a dog from a pet store, because they dont see a differnce when it comes to weather the dog came from a puppy mill or a breeder.
The question I ask is why support either, breeders or puppy mills, when there is a huge over populization of unwanted dogs in the streets and in pounds? If you really want a dog, get one from the pound, unless you want to show your dog. Then get from a breeder. –The pound isn’t adding to population of already crowded dogs, unlike breeders and puppy mills. Plus those dogs need homes more then breders, but not as much as puppy mills–
Also, if puppy mills where horrible, wouldn’t you rather rescue a puppy or dog from one, and give it a life it actually deserves away from the mill, or just leave it to be treated badly? I admit mills need to be shut down, but they should be shut down by illegalizing them. Boycotting only adds to amound of unwanted dogs. Nothing else. They’ll still continue breeding dogs even if fewer people buys.

A big part of it is ignorance, or just not caring cause you see a dog you want for cheaper and easier than you can get at a breeder. But then what happens to the puppys already in petshops? Do you forget them? Instead of fighting petshops, fight the puppy mills head on! If you are fighting the puppies already born and in need of good homes, then you are just hurting those dogs who are innocent. It is the petshop owners and the puppy mills who are to blame!!! Its painful seeing puppies come from such horrible places and how their parents are treated, but its also painful seeing a bigger puppy sitting in a small kennel for months and montths at a petshop because no one wwants it-no fresh air or exercise-why should it suffer when it had no control over where it came from?! What do you suggest is done with all those puppies who are there now? Forget them to hurt the puppy mills and petshops, because that isn’t hurting them as much as it is hurting the puppies!!! Stop the mills and in turn it stops the petshops from selling dogs! Not the other way around-nott buying those dogs is hurting the innocent animals way more than any money hungry asshole!!! Sure the petshops make money off of selling pets, but they probably make more money off of selling the supplies for the pets, so the puppy mill is the correct place to target-sure petshops shouldn’t buy from them, but hurting them just hurts the animals already in them!!! Stop the puppy mills themselves and the problem will be totally gone-no more puppy mill puppies for the asshole petshops to sell and end of story!!! BYB are a problem too, so target the owners, not tthe poor dogs that they make illegally! Those animals are suffering so much alreeady, why hurt them more?

Puppies never look happy in the pet stores and its so sad they have to live in those conditions.
And if you buy them from a pet store they have a more likely chance of getting diseases.

Although there has been information about puppy mills and byb’s on the news for a long time, there are STILL people who don’t know, don’t care, or are naive. Some believe pet store owner’s when they say the puppies are from breeders and not puppy mills. No pet store will ever admit to this, yet buyers somehow think they would be honest. Only thing we can do is spread awareness and hope people listen.

Beacause they dont care..it has to stop…the U.S. isnt a 3rd world country there shouldnt be this animal problem..everybody needs to spread the word about adoption..by putting bumper stickers on cars or posting adds in ur town…and all the ppl who love shelter dogs need to come together to stop puppy mills and breeders!!
