Are there foods that can make dogs sick?

I am a person who sometimes likes to give my dog ‘human food’ to eat, like cooked chicken/meat, a few french fries, crackers, half of whatever I’m eating. What foods can seriously harm dogs or make them sick? I heard that dairy products can make a dog sick or worse!

milk will give them the runs as well as spicy food. brown or dark chocolate will kill them. only chocolate dogs can have is white.you can give them people food. but it’s not good for them in the long run. it could shorten there life span. just think what the french fries are doing to your heart. now think what it’s doing to rovers.

Don’t give your dog table scraps, especially from rich, fatty meals.

These kinds of foods can give your dog gastroenteritis or pancreatitis. Gastroenteritis is the medical term for vomiting and diarrhea. Pancreatitis is especially dangerous. It occurs when the dog is trying to digest a very fatty meal. The pancreas produces enzymes to assist in the digestive process. With pancreatitis, the pancreas produces far too much; it gets inflamed and can even begin digesting itself. The symptoms are vomiting and diarrhea, usually bloody. The dog will become dehydrated and can die.

Don’t give your dog leftover food bones.

Most bones are dangerous treats to give to dogs. Turkey, chicken, pork, and beef rib or steak bones are the worst. These bones are all easily chewed into sharp splinters that can lodge in the GI tract and may cause esophageal or intestinal lacerations, partial or complete obstructions, or even perforations with subsequent life-threatening peritonitis.

One more word of warning: if your dog has swallowed any bones that can spinter, do NOT induce vomiting, because they could cause an esophageal laceration on the way out.

    Don’t feed your dog chocolate.

Actually dogs are allergic to the caffeine in chocolate, not to the other ingredients. And it takes a certain amount of chocolate before your dog gets sick. So if your Laborador Retriever grabs a Hershey’s Kiss, that is OK. But to be on the safe side, don’t give your dog any chocolate. And if your dog eats chocolate (particularly if he or she is a little dog), contact your vet for advice.

Here are the amounts of caffeine that will cause problems for dogs:
    100 mg caffeine per
1 kilogram of dog’s weightSymptoms will occur
    140 mg caffeine per
1 kilogram of dog’s weightToxic level

Milk chocolate has:45 mg of caffeine per ounce
Unsweetened chocolate has:400 mg of caffeine per ounce

Note: 1 (kg) kilogram is approximately 2.2 pounds. Therefore if your dog weighs 10 pounds, he or she is about 4.5 kilograms. The toxic amount of caffeine for your dog is 630 mg (milligrams) (4.5 kg X 140 mg/kg = 630 mg). Therefore, approximately 1.5 ounces of unsweetened chocolate will be a toxic amount for your 10 pound dog. It will take 14 ounces of milk chocolate to be a toxic amount.

Avoid dairy products for dogs and cats.

Dairy products are not generally dangerous, unless they contain a lot of fat (see discussion on pancreatitis), but they are usually digested poorly by both dogs and cats, who have little or none of the enzyme required to digest the lactose in milk. Just like lactose-intolerant people, lactose-intolerant dogs can develop excessive intestinal gas (flatulence) and may have foul-smelling diarrhea. It is best to avoid most dairy products altogether, although small amounts of cheese or plain yogurt are tolerated by most dogs, since these products have less lactose than most.

Chocolate is especially bad for dogs as it raises their heart rate, which could ultimately result in a heart attack. I’m sure the risk increases with a higher cocoa content, but couldn’t be positive. Best to stay away from it all together. You can get special dog chocolate though!

Aside from making your dog extremely sick, it can also make the dog overweight which puts a lot of pressure on their joints.

I’m not sure if anyone mentioned onion but this is poisonous to dogs.

  15. Growing up my mam had two dogs, and they never got any table scraps – only half a tin of Pedigree Chum every day mixed in with their dry food and they were only fed once a day – one lived to be 16 and when he died the other died a year later aged 10 (I personally think of a broken heart). But they never got any scraps and were very healthy dogs.
However, having said that, I have a Chihuahua who I free feed a brand of dry dog food, but I can’t resist his little face when I am eating, so I usually give him a little bit of what I am eating – WITHIN REASON!! I never give him anything with onion or onion seasoning in it – I was warned by the breeder and the vet when I got him that because he is such a small dog, Onion and Chocolate would be poisonous to him, so I have always avoided giving him either of those two things. But I left him with my sister one weekend when I was going away, and my 4 year old nephew decided to share half his bar of milk chocolate with Oscar – my sister was in such a panic when she discovered this that she brought him straight to the vet – but he was absolutely fine. The thing is, Oscar does manage to get a little chocolate from someone or he will steal a bit every now and then, and so far (touch wood) he has been fine. My partner also gave him some minced beef stew one day not realizing that there was onion in it – but he was fine – had some seriously evil smelling farts for the rest of the day, and belched a lot too but was fine.
But as a rule, the only table scraps I will give him are a litle piece of lean meat, some potato (ehich he loves for some reason)or some bread, which he also loves. Once in a blue moon he gets a treat of a cube of cheese or a saucer of low-fat milk, but never any more than that because I was told that dogs are lactose intolerant!
He also loves nuts, but he doesn’t get them very often either because they have a very high fat content!

Also RAW bones are safe to give. Raw meat is VERY healthy to give too.

  20. Chocolate can kill them. Anything with caffeine is bad for them – it upsets their stomachs. Grapes and raisins can cause kidney damage. Onions will make many dogs vomit. So will a lot of salt.

French fries and other fried foods are no better for your dog than they are for you. They have limited if any nutritional value and are full of fat. They won’t make the dog sick, but they will eventually make him fat and clog his arteries.

Cooked meat is not bad for your dog as long as it’s not too fatty. Vegetables are very good for him if he’ll eat them, but if you feed him corn, don’t feed it on the cob because the cob is no good for him.

most people food is harmless to dogs, some are very bad.
The list of bads include chocolate, all dairy(dogs are lactose intolerant) and will get diarrhea, onions are bad, grapes are also, although my dogs love them. The best thing to remember is MODERATION. Some people would not dream of giving their dogs people food, some do it all the time. Be careful of some house plants, acetominaphen is very bad, any form of caffeine, vitamins that they can get into, antifreeze will kill a dog very quickly. It’s very much like having a toddler in the house. You have to watch everything, and keep checking floors a lot. One of mine tried to eat a rubber band.

  27. Interesting, I have always heard giving your dog table scraps is not good however, my husband is from a foreign country and has made it a point to give her both; regular dog food and table scraps. He has a very good point, if you never give your dog anything but dog food, they are animals and will consume whatever they can get in their mouth; hence, make their stomach strong! I didn’t believe it but I had a Fox Terrier who lived to almost 15 yrs. old (rare age I have heard) and now a rott-pit mix who loves apples and grapes and is VERY healthy. To each is own, but I do agree about one specific, she gets absolutely no chocolate. She loves lollipops and orange sherbert! I haven’t tried dairy only because I worry she will get gas! As far as her digestive – wonderful, regular! She caught the flu last fall (vet called it flu) and we brought her home and made her chicken soup…..she loved it! Good luck!

You should really feed your dog actual dog food – a good tinned and/or dry food. Also supplement with bones and fresh meat, but not cooked bones!

If you feed your dog at the table, or give it only human food, it will get used to asking for food at the table, and any visitors you have may not appreciate this!

Remember, dog food is for dogs, human food is for humans! Our dietary requirements are not the same!

I’ve also heard that potatoes that are starting to go green are not good for dogs, among other things.
