How long at a time do sick dogs sleep?

My dog started showing signs of Parvo Monday so we took him to the vet the same day. He stayed at the vets on IV’s for a couple of days. He is back home now (Friday) and still sick. How long at one time does a sick dog sleep? Should I wake him to make him drink?

never wake a dog up even if it sick. don’t want to be ridiculous but he could bite.

  1. Parvo is very serious, and takes a long time to recover from. He probably will sleep a lot for a while. But is is important that he have fluids, so if he seems to be doing nothing but sleeping and not eating or drinking, I would wake him and encourage him to eat and drink, at least a little bit. If you can’t get any fluids into him, then I woud call the vet. Most dogs that die from Parvo die because they are dehydrated, so keeping him hydrated is very important. If you can get him to drink a little bit, then just let him sleep and get to feeling better.

    If he’s not drinking from his bowl, I recommend filling a syringe every hour or two with water and squirting it down his throat.

    Once the dog is home, she should be allowed to rest quietly and not be disturbed as she recovers. A bland diet of boiled hamburger and rice can be fed for one week to allow her digestive system to recuperate before transitioning her back to normal kibble.

    When a dog has been successfully treated for parvo, it is important to keep it isolated from other dogs, especially unvaccinated dogs. An infected dog can shed the virus in its feces up to 39 days post infection, so it is important to carefully dispose of waste and disenfect the dog’s enviorment with bleach. With prompt and aggressive treatment, dogs have a good chance at recovering from Canine Parvovirus.

    my dog just got over parvo.
    Pedialyte(unflavored)
    pepto bismal
    gatorade

    these helped my puppy a lot! You may have to get like a turkey baster and force it to drink it.

    get baby food(chicken flavor) to help with the protein or put chicken buyon in the pedialyte.
