Very sick dogs – why do people ask questions instead of going to the vet?

February 7, 2010 - 6:42 am 25 Comments

I’ve seen so many questions about health problems with dogs. Some of these are life and death issues. I don’t understand how these people could sit at the computer instead of getting to the vet. Are these responsible dog guardians? Not in my eyes.

of course they arent responsible dog owners.

they are stupid and/or dont really care about the health of the animals and want to save some money by avoiding the vet.

I agree. The best opinion is a medical opinion, when it’s concerning health. Duh!

Nope they are not responsible owners.. They are cheap and selfish, and obviously care more about themselves than their poor dog.. Some of the questions I have read about dogs screaming in pain, and everything else.. I want to spend the money and take their poor dog to the vet.. I can’t imagine how they are sitting there wondering if they can use a home remedy or how they can get out of spending the money to help out their poor dog.. Very very sad..

I think that most people shouldn’t even have a dog.. If YA is a good cross section of the average pet owners out there.. I know why the shelters are so full…

Because we have had some pretty horrendous experiences at the vets. Some cannot get to the vet or afford to pay a vet for something that could be cured by some home remedy.

Because many pet owners are cheap. They feed the crappiest stuff on the market, they don’t want to shell out any money for their dogs health and look for a quick fix from a bunch of strangers on the internet. You know as well as I do that many of these dogs are just left to the point of death, then they come back and post how sad they are that the dog died and want us to help them deal with grief too!
It is very disturbing. Then you have all the back yard breeders letting mothers and puppies suffer because their sights are set on profits and they don’t want to fork any $$ over to the vets.
For every good home out there…. There are at LEAST 50 bad ones.

There are several post a day from people asking … Where can I find a CHEAP dog? Sad thing is they will find one and the dogs will suffer.

I quite agree. You, also, get people asking questions about their sick babies and sick children. Why would they do that on here rather than get to a doctor/hospital?

No they are not!! I couldn’t imagine just sitting here on the computer if my dog needed urgent care!!

I couldn’t agree more. I think a majority of them don’t want to spend the money needed on good vet care, it’s a shame, because the animals suffer from the owners lack of responsiblity.

I agree with you. Some of the question asked don’t need to be here they need to be at the vets. I think its because e they are lazy and irresponsible owners. Think they can get a quick fix here instead of doing the common sense thing and going to the vets.
I shake my head so much some times I make myself dizzy!!!

You’re exactly right. If it’s a minor problem, then yeah, use Yahoo Answers… But if it’s serious, GO TO THE VET!!! There are soooo many irresponsible dog owners out there it makes me sick. Part is due to the fact that people are just uneducated and clueless, and others think "oh it’s just a dog..it’ll be ok" I really feel bad for the animals in those situations. Some people just shouldn’t have animals…. and a lot of them are on these boards. It’s a shame.

I think some writers may be like many parents of kids, who will find out as much as possible before going to the DR for treatment. Like some DRs, not all vets are as caring & thoughtful in their decisions as they should be…Maybe they’re simply trying to get some other pet owners/caretakers opinions 1st, so when they do visit the vet, they can throw out some ideas for diagnosis that the vet may not have thought of…even if they are pros, Vets can have bad days too & unfortunately, their occasional wandering minds may affect OUR pets treatment, when their on the clock.

Don’t be so quick to judge, I’ve seem some situations where there’s a valid reason for not being able to GET to the vet right now etc. And for most of the issues, all they would have needed to do is Google it if unsure.
Hell, there are even online vets to answer stuff and help people.
Use the darn little box supplied to look something up on the web, try to help, or not, it’s all down top choices. "go to the vet, ask the vet" just screams inability to discern as well.
Obviously if it’s like your cats keeping on vomiting etc that’s serious, but I’ve lost count how many small things I;ve seen people just say go to the vet, I’ve looked it up and it’s been nothing that is so serious.

I think its because it might be hard to find a time to go
I don’t understand either but they r right to try to find an answer on their own at 1st but I do not get the times when some has to be done or the animal might die but of coarse they may not no it comes down to life or death

You might ask the same question about people that post medical and legal questions. What makes them think anyone here is qualified to answer?

Maybe for the same reason that humans without health insurance self diagnose. the cost. I take my pets to the vet, but when i do it COSTS LOTS. So should we put all uninsured humans to sleep because they are irresponsible and cant afford a doctor. Situations happen to not afford a vet, like gas prices. Doesnt make them dumb people that shouldnt have animals. If you want to chastise then talk to your vet about their ridiculious prices and how they overcharge the vulnerable. Just like a doctor.

Isn’t because they feel the need to talk about it reason enough?? It would be safe to say that a majority of them know if they have to go to the vet or not, but a little reassurance would go a long ways.

I think a lot of them are bored and really don’t have pets just trying to get people riled up.

The dog section gets the worse of the site from what I have seen. In my opinion it needs its own monitors.

I think I answered one question stating the blood should tell you what to do and I got reported?? I posted a joke last week and it was removed for offensive material?? Im more confused that Yahoo allows some of this to go on too. I think as soon as someone comes to the dog section their screen should flash "NO VETERINIARIAN ON THIS SITE"

Cause vets are so darn expensive these days and want to sell you everything your little Dog (spot) will end up costing you more than your own or child’s health problems would.

LOL I posted almost the same question last night! It’s scary isn’t it?? Someone answered my question with a story about people in the auto section asking "my car lights on fire every time i turn it on i have no mechanical experience what should i do? PS DON’T tell me to take it to a mechanic" i thought it was rather funny. Really…people can be so dumb.

I feel you on this one

My boyfriend has a joke about me answer questions in YA.. he will say "So you must be telling folk to Take Their Dog to The Vet"… he doesn’t even use the phrase computer or internet or Yahoo or any of that

    And I don’t understand it either….

One question… this college student said she was given a puppy, named it Pluto, it was @ 8 weeks old, it was crying when she needed to leave to go to her classes… so she "set it free" by letting it outside… and then acidentally ran over it with her own car… he appeared okay to her so… she went to class,.. then came back home hours later… and in her question she wanted to know if the dog was seriously hurt because it wasn’t walking to well when she got home.. and she was wondering how to help the poor little puppy……

Look in my answers history… if that one wasn’t deleted by the asker, then it is still there

Okay I’ll even grant her that she is young & maybe not so stupid…. but SHE RAN OVER THE PUPPY WITH HER OWN CAR & THEN LEFT IT THERE…. not to mention SHE LET AN 8 WEEK OLD PUPPY OUT OF THE HOUSE WITHOUT ANY SUPERVISION

That is simply IGNORANT (look up the definition of ignorant)

Note also that I have extensive history with animals and I foster-home for a local resuce center while an animal is recovering from medical issues (for example the one we are fostering now is a small puppy that was let out and then attacked by several dogs at one time…. amazing that the little guy lived!! he is recovering now.. and when in better shape will be placed up for adoption)

They are not responsible owners when I ask a question about my pets health it is not going to be about something that is life or death.
Some people can’t afford to go to the vet or sometimes children might be asking the questions.
A responsible owner does not let their dog who has multiple symptoms wait on answers from the Internet. I don’t understand why they don’t at least call a vet and then listen to them.
I was helped out by some people here about my dogs leg problems but I was already planning on calling the vet to schedule him an appointment and he was not vomiting or in lots of pain and he certainly was not shaking and foaming at the mouth like some of the questions I have seen.

Hello..actually, I’ve seen very few questions requiring vet visits considering how many questions come thru Yahoo Answers.. even worse are so called, "Professionals ~ a Good Pro would not be in Yahoo Answers claiming, professionalism & giving answers !" especially when I know they are giving wrong answers, so to me that’s worse then people who don’t run to vets for hang nails, hamsters…where an unscrupulous vet sure will look @ them, for a 100 bucks !! Many do take advantage of people who think of pets like they are children, etc. Reality is …they are not !! There’s far worse in here then Per Owners who can’t afford vet bills !!! Take Care :)

I agree. I would take my dog to the vet because he has enormous amounts of blood in his urine and feces. However, I can’t take him because of the severe chest pains I keep experiencing. What do you think I should do?
