Amazing Blindfolded Dog on Pet Star!

March 10, 2010 - 2:01 am 25 Comments

Here’s my sheltie Taz’s appearance on Pet Star performing his routine of tricks while blindfolded, the first dog to my knowledge to ever do such a thing. I would never have thought a dog would anything like this, particularly since most dogs refuse to move when they have their eyes covered. But once I found out he was willing to do simple tricks like waving with the blindfold on, we just started working out harder and harder skills and he just totally amazed me with his uncanny ability to figure things out as we went along, and most importantly…still having fun while doing it! He is quite a show-off and clearly enjoys the attention he gets when doing tricks like this.

I do have to laugh a bit at Mario holding him all through the judge’s intro and comments. Taz is not particularly fond of being held but is too polite to really object to it, but they actually had to tape that twice so both Taz and Mario were obviously getting very tired and quite happy when he finally put him down!

Landmark Legislation to Ban Sale of Dogs and Cats in Pet Stores Passed in West Hollywood, California

March 10, 2010 - 2:01 am 12 Comments

The West Hollywood City Council passed landmark legislation on Monday, February 1st, 2010 banning the sale of cats and dogs in pet stores unless from rescues and shelters. This law will prevent the sale of cats and dogs in West Hollywood from cruel puppy and kitten mills. The ordinance was passed unanimously by the City Council.

According to coverage by NBC Los Angeles, the ordinance stems from an investigation of a West Hollywood pet store, Elite Animals, by the Companion Animal Protection Society (CAPS) which uncovered evidence that the shop allegedly misled consumers by selling puppy mill dogs and broke federal law by importing animals for resale.

Social Compassion in Legislation reports that the West Hollywood City Council not only received emails from local and state supporters on its proposed legislation but also from groups and individuals across the country and even as far away as the United Kingdom. The legislation “could be the beginning of the end of puppy mills and it’s happening in West Hollywood, one of the most progressive cities on animal welfare issues,” Ed Buck, Director of Social Compassion in Legislation.

In passing the legislation, West Hollywood continues its leadership in passing progressive animal welfare legislation. The city was the first in the U.S. to ban cat de-clawing. Many other California cities followed suit last year with their own de-claw bans.

Speakers at the council meeting included Dr. Allan Drusys of Social Compassion in Legislation, Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States, Dawn Armstrong, executive director of the Lake Tahoe Humane Society, Chris DeRose, founder and president of Last Chance for Animals, and Carole Raphael Davis of the Companion Animal Protection Society.

A statement read by Norma Sandler for Bill Dyer of In Defense of Animals, who was unable to attend stated that “This unprecedented, historic action, in this Guardian city where the de-clawing of cats is also banned, will send a signal throughout our country for others to follow. West Hollywood will always be remembered as the city that had the foresight and compassion to first end the horrible commerce of puppy mills in our society.”

Show transcript;

BETH: A Voting Dog, Horse Sushi, and a Canine behind the wheel! Today, on Zootoo News.

BETH: Real Pet news that proves the truth is stranger than fiction.

LAURA: Because when things get catty, it’s a good thing.

Story 1
LAURA: Jane Balogh of Federal Way, Washington
could face felony charges because she registered her Australian shepherd-terrier mix, Duncan, to vote.

She said she did this to make a point that Washington’s voting requirements are too lax.

In the prior 3 elections, she sent in bogus ballots and even signed the dog’s voter registration card with a paw print.
Wow, I can’t believe it took authorities so long to catch this.
Duncan’s not even American!

Story 2
BETH: Due to shortages of tuna in Japan, sushi chefs are now contemplating horse meat.

A tuna scare in 1973 forced sushi chefs to find other red-colored substitutes like raw horse.

One Tokyo restaurant owner says worse comes to worse, they will use the surprisingly tasty horse meat once again.

LAURA: You mean Sea Horse, right?

BETH: No. Horse Horse.

Sushi picture receives horse tail.

Both girls lean over and “vomit”.

Story 3
BETH: A seriously ill teenager is being kept alive by horse and rabbit blood.

Cara Heaney was diagnosed with a rare illness called aplastic anaemia.

She is now receiving transfusions of Horse antibodies and rabbit blood products to fighting off bone-marrow failure.
Her mother said: “Without this treatment Cara would not be alive today.”
When asked if she feels differently after these transfusions, 14 year old Cara said “Nay!”

LAURA: [Wow. Pretty good.] You do any other horse impressions?

BETH: slaps. Blows lips. Stops.

LAURA: Anything else?

BETH: Nay.

Story 4
LAURA: Two street mutts who became ace sniffer dogs at a Thailand airport have been fired for
urinating on luggage and
sexually harassing female passengers.

Apparently, so many passengers complained about their lewd behavior they had to be fired.

BETH: Come on, can you blame them? I mean, did you see those skirts they were wearing!?

LAURA: I’m not saying they were asking for it, but…

Story 5
LAURA: A gray tabby kitten, trapped in a storm sewer drain in West Verginia,
finally climbed out after 250 gallons of water were pumped into the drain.

On the scene of the rescue were 2 firetrucks, 5 firefighters, and several animal rescuers.

Geez, that’s a lot of men to get excited over one wet pussy…

BOTH: …cat.

Story 6
BETH: In Idaho, a black lab named Charlie drove a car into the river,
while his owner was running in for a pizza.

Somehow the dog got the car in neutral and coasted straight into the water,
jumping out before it sank.

BETH: Be careful on the road — watch out for driving dogs and Paris Hilton!

LAURA: Yeah!, and now he’s charged with a D.U.I. — Doggie Under Influence!

BETH: Yeah! And you can bet the punishment will be Ruff!

LAURA: Charlie’s owner should have taught him to put the car in Bark!

And they laugh and laugh.

Have text appear — Thanks for watching Zootoo News. Real Pet news that proves the truth is stranger than fiction. (As if we can’t say it cause we are laughing too hard).
